It can be overwhelming to face a sea of boxes and figure out where to start. With a bit of strategy and organization, you can make the process quick and painless. Here are some tips to help you unpack efficiently and settle into your new space with ease.

Start with the essentials

As soon as you arrive, begin by unpacking the essentials: toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items and bedding. Having them within reach makes your first night and morning in the new place more comfortable.

One room at a time

Instead of opening every box at once, focus on one room at a time. Start with the rooms you use the most, such as the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. This keeps you organized and lets you finish one area before moving on to the next.

Put things away as you go

As you unpack, take the time to put items in their designated places. Don't just shove things into cabinets or closets to get them out of the way. By organizing as you unpack, you avoid having to reorganize later, which saves time and reduces stress.

If you have items that don't have a clear place, baskets, storage containers and drawer organizers can help you make the most of your space.

Break down empty boxes

As you empty each box, flatten it and set it aside for recycling. This avoids clutter and gives you more room to move around, and seeing the pile of empty boxes grow gives a real sense of accomplishment.

Decorate last

Decorating is one of the most enjoyable parts of moving, but it doesn't need to be done right away. Get your essentials in place first, then take your time with artwork, photos and other personal touches. That way you can see how the space feels before deciding on the final layout.

Get the whole family involved

If you're moving with family, involve everyone: assign a room or a specific task to each person to make the job go faster. It is also a great way for everyone to start feeling at home.

Keep the momentum

It can be tempting to take a break once the essentials are unpacked, but try to keep going. Even a few boxes a day, done consistently, will help you get settled faster. Set small goals, such as one room per day.

Unpacking doesn't have to be daunting: stay organized, take it one step at a time and make your new space feel like home as quickly as possible.
