By Easy Move
In short
Start six to eight weeks ahead: ask for an estimate, sort through your things, arrange access, then pack room by room. Use the last week to confirm, label and prepare a "first night" box.
Six to eight weeks before
- Pick an ideal date and one or two backup dates: flexibility makes it easier to find availability.
- Ask for an estimate with the full addresses, the floors, the elevator and a list of the large furniture.
- Sort through your belongings: what isn't moving doesn't need to be packed, transported or paid for.
Four weeks before
- Check with your building manager and your municipality about reserving the elevator and parking for the truck.
- Gather boxes, tape, paper and markers; start with the rooms you use least.
- Make a list of the organizations to notify of your change of address.
The last week
- Confirm the arrival time, the addresses and the access with the moving company.
- Label each box with its destination room and its main contents.
- Empty, defrost and clean the refrigerator and the freezer.
- Prepare a "first night" box: sheets, medication, chargers, important papers, toiletries.
Moving day and the day after
Keep documents, keys and valuables with you. Do a last walk-through of every room, closet and storage space before you leave.
On arrival, show where each piece of furniture goes, then check the condition of your belongings before the crew leaves. Note any problem in writing, as set out in the terms of your contract.
General preparation guide; it does not replace your municipality's rules or the terms of your contract.
